This is a fun, game format that challenges students to create 3-6 letter words from random boulders of letters. I was able to display my iPad on full screen through the lcd projector. I demonstrated what was involved in playing the game; a few students were familiar with the app. Then, students took turns at attempting to complete a level in the 90 second time limit. The rest of the students provided a plethora of suggestions for possible words to spell. It became more challenging when I put the restriction that words had to be more than 3 letters. It was very engaging for all involved.
I don't know if I would create a lesson or even integrate this app into a lesson at the 7th grade level. While it was fun, especially for students who are good spellers (who helped those who weren't), spelling is not something we spend time on in class. The randomization of the letter boulders does not allow for the reinforcement or practice of specific words that may be related to curriculum or an assignment in class.
The kids were certainly impressed that I even had an iPad and that we were using it in class.
